What is the most ideal lighting for poultry and why?

There are many aspects to consider when thinking about the best lighting for poultry, so what are the most important factors and why? Dr. Gabrielle House has compiled the top four things to consider and why:

  1. Type of artificial light source
    1. Growers should select artificial light sources that are designed to withstand barn environments and are suitable for humans and poultry. LEDs are ideal because they are commercially available, have many spectral options, can be dimmable, and are extremely energy efficient.
  2. Light Spectrum/Color
    1. Research shows that blue/green light is ideal for broilers and pullets, while red-enhanced white light is ideal for layers and breeders. Blue/green light encourages calming behavior and has performance benefits for broilers and pullets. Red-enhanced white light helps layers and breeders maintain their circadian rhythm and egg laying/mating behaviors.
  3. Dimmability
    1. Like with any other system added to a poultry house, having precise control over lighting is key to bird success. Lights that dim from 100% - 0.1% can mitigate behavioral issues and bird stress during daily light transition periods
  4. Light Plans and Design
    1. Understanding where key elements such as feeders/drinkers, heaters, nests, and slats are is essential when planning where to install lights in a poultry house. Ensuring correct lighting distribution and intensity for all species can help growers reach performance goals by encouraging desirable bird behaviors in targeted zones in the house.
