How Reliable, Consistent Lighting Helps Ricky Harrison of Harrison Farm, LLC “Kill It” With Bigger Chickens

For Alabama poultry grower Ricky Harrison, reliable lighting is an important part of raising bigger chickens. After seeing the durability, brightness, and consistent coverage of Signify Animal Lighting’s 14W multi-adapter dim-to-blue LED bulbs (MLB), he installed them in a second poultry house and continues to beat his weight estimates.

The Challenge: Brighter Lighting and Better Coverage

When Ricky Harrison, owner of Harrison Farm, LLC in Lawrence County, Alabama, wanted to improve lighting in his poultry houses, he was looking for two things: brighter LED lighting and more uniform coverage throughout the house.

His goal was straightforward: grow chickens as big as possible.

About 10 years ago, Ricky turned to Signify Animal Lighting for help. Signify developed a lighting plan for his farm to determine the appropriate number of bulbs and support more consistent light distribution throughout the house.

After installing the 14W Multi-Adapter Light (MLB) bulbs in his first house, Ricky was impressed by their performance and durability. The results gave him the confidence to install the same lighting in a second house, helping maintain consistency across his operation.

The bulbs proved their toughness, too.

“I was so impressed with the light’s durability,” Ricky shares. “I actually ran over one with the litter pulverizer, and it still worked!”

The Solution: Lighting Designed for Consistent Performance

Over the years, Ricky’s operation has changed. He initially raised Pilgrim chickens on a 60-day growing cycle. Today, he grows chickens for Mar-Jac on a 30-day cycle.

With a shorter production cycle, keeping birds moving efficiently through each stage of growth is important. Ricky sees lighting as a key part of that process.

“You really need to move them along and light plays a crucial role,” he says.

Ricky chose Signify’s 14W MLB bulbs for their brightness, uniform coverage, and dim-to-blue capability. Blue light has been studied for its potential effects on bird behavior and stress, making light color an important consideration in poultry lighting programs.

For Ricky, lighting is one part of a larger picture that includes the grower’s management practices, water, and feed.

“Many factors go into raising a chicken, such as the grower, water and feeding,” Ricky explains. “But for the chicken, light is the biggest thing.”

The Results: Reliable Lighting and Consistent Flock Performance

Ricky’s results speak for themselves: he consistently beats his weight estimates.

“We’re killing it,” he says.

Just as important, the lighting has proven dependable. Ricky values not having to spend time and effort repeatedly replacing bulbs or dealing with lights that stop working.

“We don’t have any problems. The lights don’t go out, and I don’t have to constantly change bulbs. I talk to other growers, and they are always changing out their bulbs,” he says.

The consistent light coverage throughout his poultry houses is another benefit, helping Ricky maintain a lighting setup he trusts from one house to the next.

That confidence extends beyond his own operation. Ricky’s son, who works alongside him and is building two additional poultry houses, plans to use the same MLB bulbs.

“I would suggest Signify to anyone,” Ricky says. “The light is that good.”

Lighting That Growers Can Count On

For Ricky Harrison, the right lighting is about more than brightness. It’s about dependable performance, consistent coverage, and equipment that stands up to the demands of everyday poultry production.

After a decade of experience with Signify’s lighting, he has found a solution he trusts and one he plans to continue using as his family’s operation grows.
