Poultry Lighting
Lighting for poultry is evolving rapidly. At Once by Signify, we are dedicated to being at the forefront of scientific research and innovation. Scroll below to learn how lighting can improve poultry welfare, feed conversion and more, or click below to connect with our team.
Why poultry need specific lighting
Poultry are highly photosensitive and require certain types of light for many reasons:
- Proper lighting mimics natural daylight cycles, helping to regulate poultry's biological rhythms (feeding, mating, egg-laying, and resting behaviors)
- The correct light spectrum for poultry encourages growth, development, and egg production.
- Light also affects hormone production and overall bird health and performance
SUNLIGHT VS. ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING
The debate between using natural sunlight versus artificial lighting in chicken houses continues to spark interest and discussion. However, it's essential to understand the nuances and complexities involved with the two light sources. Learn more from Dr. Gabrielle House, Once by Signify Poultry Scientist.
TOP 3 REASONS to Measure light in CHICKEN LUX
Did you know that when light intensity is measured in "lux", it is only relevant to people but not animals? Each animal species perceives light differently due to differences in their visual systems. In fact, there is a "chicken lux", a "pig lux", a "turkey lux", etc. So far, scientists have worked out the "chicken lux" best, and that's why we advocate the use of "clux" or "gallilux" used for chickens instead of lux
How Lighting impacts feed conversion
Lighting is a critical factor in optimizing feed conversion rates for poultry. It is important to provide the right amount and type of light to ensure animals are stimulated to consume feed, resulting in faster growth and improved feed conversion. Species-specific lighting solutions utilize poultry biology and preferences to stimulate feeding behaviors, activity, and enhanced welfare. With dynamic lighting and light recipes, growers can adjust many light characteristics, including spectrum, intensity, distribution, and photoperiod, over the grow out period to provide optimal lighting conditions at every stage of grow-out.
GRADIENT LIGHT ENHANCEs BROILER PERFORMANCE + WELFARE
In collaboration with Tyson Foods, we are proud to announce Optient. This lighting system draws inspiration from nature by using non-uniform or gradient lighting to mimic the varied lighting environments found in the wild. This promotes natural behavior in chickens, keeping flocks calm and stress-free, resulting in improved animal welfare.
